Ocean Science Education Building University of California, Santa Barbara
This building is a vessel for the research and celebration of the Channel Islands, a fragile marine ecosystem off the southern California's coast. It houses two functions, a marine science education center, which teaches the local community about the islands' ecosystem, and a research center, which houses offices for marine scientists from NOAA and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. The two functions meet around a central courtyard, which houses a large kelp tank. A larger observation deck, contained within a wooden volume, provides an ideal viewing spot for observing and reflecting on the islands.
